Programs That Work



These programs help youth create aspirations for the future, providing opportunities for career exploration and educational enhancement.

Power Hour: A comprehensive homework help and tutoring program, POWER HOUR is designed to raise the academic proficiency of Club members ages 6-12. Along with the paid staff at the Center, local fraternities/sororities, and Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO have committed to providing volunteers to assist students.

Goals For Graduation: Goals for Graduation introduces Club members ages 6-15 to the concept of academic goal setting. In one-on-one sessions with Club professionals, members set achievable "Know-I-Can" goals, more challenging "Think-I-Can" goals and yearly "Believe-I-Can" goals, then create action plans. The program provides for recognition of members' achievements at every step of the journey.

Goals For Growth: This program teaches young people ages 8-12 skills for setting and achieving their own personal, education and career goals.

CareerLaunch: CareerLaunch is a career exploration and mentoring program for teens ages 13-18. It includes the CareerLaunch Web site that allows teens to take an interest survey, explore careers, identify training or college requirements, seek out financial aid and play skills-building games.

Job Ready: JOB READY! is a comprehensive program that teaches young people ages 16-18 effective job-hunting techniques and helps them develop the skills necessary to be successful once on the job.


Helping youth become responsible caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs. They also develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making, contributing to Club and community, and celebrating our national heritage.

ClubTech: Through ClubTech, members receive basic computer skills, introduction to the Internet, music making, photography, graphic design, and learn safe and responsible Internet usage.

Torch Club: This small-group leadership development program will offer service to student's ages 11 - 13. Members elect officers, plan, and implement their own activities and community service projects.

Girl Scouts: The Girl Scout program at the Club encourages increased skill building and responsibility, and promotes the development of strong leadership and decision-making skills. All program activities are age-appropriate and based on the four program goals, as well as the Girl Scout "Promise and Law."

Boy Scouts: The Boy Scouts program at the Club will provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness.

Youth of the Month/National Youth of the Year: Boys and Girls Clubs of America premier youth recognition program for Club members ages 14-18 promotes and recognize service to Center and community, academic performance and contributions to family and spiritual life.

TEENSupreme® Keystone Clubs: Keystone Clubs are chartered small group leadership development clubs for young people ages 14-18. Keystoners elect officers, choose their own activities, plan, and implement community service projects. A national charter entitles a Keystone Club to participate in regional and national Keystone conferences.


These initiatives help youth achieve and maintain healthy, active lifestyles.

Smart Moves: The SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) is a nationally recognized prevention/education program that addresses the problems of drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity. The ultimate goal: to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior.

Act SMART: Developed as a joint project between Boys & Girls Clubs and the American Red Cross, Act SMART is an HIV/AIDS prevention program designed for Center members age 6-17.

SMART Girls: SMART Girls is a health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program for girls ages 10-15. The program is designed to encourage healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will enable early adolescent girls to develop to their full potential.

Passport to Manhood: Passport to Manhood promotes and teaches responsibility while reinforcing positive behavior in male Club members ages 11-14. Each participant is issued his own "Passport" to underscore the idea that he is on a journey of maturation and personal growth.

Street SMART: Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Street SMART initiative consists of three components designed to help young people ages 11-13 effectively resist gangs and violence, resolve conflicts, and be positive peer helpers in their communities. It also allows them the opportunity to hold annual events that celebrate anti-gang, anti-violence themes.


The Center will use its facilities and partner with other agencies that have gymnasiums to support sports, fitness, and recreation programming. Students will have the opportunity to participate in basketball, soccer, volleyball, kickball, softball and other various activities that support health and wellness. In addition, an eight-week Jr. Golf program will be available during summer program hours.


Programs in this area enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing.
